These trainers are sometimes faced with the dangerous act of pretending to be a criminal to help ensure accurate training of the dog. Police dog trainers often are very good at what they do, and have been certified to train dogs for the police force.
One job of a police dog trainer is to make sure they train the dog to track by smell. A good police dog can smell of someone’s belongings and sniff their way to the criminal or victim using their trained nose. Granted it has not rained recently and washed the smell away, most police dogs are capable of doing this. Police dogs are also trained to smell out drugs. This is great for police who are working high smuggling areas, and can use a dog to determine if someone or something has an illegal drug on them. Police dogs go through a lot of training to be able to actually work with the police. Because police dogs are put through so much training, the police dog trainers have to work very hard and close with the dogs. Making sure they get it right every time and will not lead anyone on a fake hunt. It is also the job of the trainer to ensure that the police dog knows the commands used by the K9 police so that they are not confused by a new set of commands once they are accepted. After a police dog trainer is finished training a dog, the dog will then be put through a test by actual K9 police. Sometimes the test is a game of smell and track where one officer will leave something behind for the dog to smell and will go and hide. The dog will then have the object that was left behind to smell of and then sniff his way to the police officer that is hiding. This will ensure that the dog has been properly trained and can perform the job of a police dog.
